Anyone have any ideas (or does anyone have a mythtv rpm compiled with debugging

You don't say what platform you're using, but maybe you should try the
appropriate normal ATrpms packages _and_ the matching one from e.g.
http://dl.atrpms.net/debug/f14-x86_64/atrpms/stable/
