I'm using XBMC Atlantis alpha 4 on my Hardy installation on AppleTV with no problems. The Microsoft MCE remote worked with no changes at all, though I haven't tried the apple tv remote. Once you get Ubuntu up and running you can use apt-get to install everything as per the xbmc linix install instructions.
