I followed the instructions here http://code.google.com/p/atv-bootloader/wiki/BootableUSBLinuxInstall to put Ubuntu 7.10 on a USB Drive.
Everything went 100% atv-bootloader booted, I was able to boot the the Live CD, select install, set / during the install as the second ext3 partition as per the instructions and swap, the install ran 100% no issues, then when I reboot the AppleTV in USB mode, it attempts to read the flash drive, then reboots itself back to the AppleTV menu...
