It has been some time since this workaround was introduced. I think it is either an incompatibility between Emacs CVS and Emacs 21, or one between Emacs and XEmacs that we are dealing with here. No harm done, anyway, and thanks for doing the work of checking my various ideas. If I had looked more closely, some of this would not have been necessary: the first code really was quite wrong even on GNU make.
