I guess the something like the following should work.

DESCEND=test -n "$(subdirs)" && (OLDPWD="`pwd`";for i in ""$(subdirs);do cd 
$$i;echo "Descending into `pwd`";$(MAKE) 'DESTDIR=$(DESTDIR)' 
PACKAGE=$(PACKAGE) $@ || exit $$?;cd $$OLDPWD;echo "Ascending into 
$$OLDPWD";done)
