Uh, safer? The problem is that one changes the historic state of the files: checking out an old version with the same tags as previously will suddenly give a different result. Of course this can be a problem in certain situations, but you _want_ exactly this to happen. So I don't see how letting Savannah do this by somehow fiddling with the files is going to make this safer. Sounds more like a way of passing the buck. If you _want_ to have the job done, I don't see how Savannah can do it any safer than you.
