I was about to install aucctex 11.88 to a colleague of mine how uses XEmacs as well since he wanted to use forward and inverse search for pdf files (MaC with Skim) but it turned out that he needs to use latex (and then dvi2ps and ps2pdf) because he uses psfrag which seems only to work with latex and not pdflatex.
