No. prettify-symbols can display symbols as one single char.

Yes, because ?␣␣ is one char and one symbol.
Anyway, I followed Rasmus suggestion and now \qquad is displayed as
SHUFFLE PRODUCT (⧢) which looks pretty much like two consecutive OPEN
BOX chars.
