Ok but it is my understanding that tex-mode is needed since

,----
| tex--prettify-symbols-alist is a variable defined in ‘tex-mode.el’.
| Its value is shown below.
|
| Documentation:
| A ‘prettify-symbols-alist’ usable for (La)TeX modes.
|
| Value: (("\\setZ" . 8484)
| ("\\setR" . 8477)
| ("\\setP" . 8473)
| ("\\setN" . 8469)
| ("\\alpha" . 945)
| ("\\beta" . 946)
| ("\\gamma" . 947)
| ("\\delta" . 948)
| ("\\epsilon" . 1013)
| ("\\zeta" . 950)
| ("\\eta" . 951)
| ("\\theta" . 952)
| ("\\iota" . 953)
| ("\\kappa" . 954)

And I recall that some difficulties I encountered were solved by Tassilo
however submitting patches to emacs not to auctex. In any case I do what
you suggest.
