Basically by running `make [...] snapshot' [1] which does `check-dist'
and `tar-ball'.

The idea of the snapshot target was to get the same tar/zip file as
for a release. This doesn't include all files present in CVS. See
the 2004-04-12 ChangeLog entry (splitting `dist' into `check-dist',
`release-commit' and `tar-ball') which was discussed on the list,
IIRC.
I have been away for a couple of days starting from April 29. After
that, I didn't find time to get familiar with the new configure and
install scheme yet and I couldn't follow all the discussions about it
on the lists. I don't know which files should be included (what about
./preview?) so I'm afraid it doesn't make much sense if I try to fix
this (and I probably won't have much time to work on AUCTeX in the
next weeks, sorry).
Bye, Reiner.
