In the documentation for auctex 11.82 I don't find something about
LaTeX-item-list. Additionally there should be a hint how to configure
list-like environments with \item's, which use an optionally argument.
Imho, in the file mdwlist.el there should be lines like
;; Add description* to the list of environments which have an optional
;; argument for each item.
(add-to-list 'LaTeX-item-list '("description*" . LaTeX-item-argument))
in lambda()
