I have a general idea of the culprit and I have a workaround for this.
Terminal emacs inherits the properties of my terminal and executes any
command available to the terminal. Maybe something to do with exec-
path...
On the other hand, Emacs.app does not do this _when i open it from the
finder_ and apparently loads up some minimal defaults instead.
So the temporary solution is to open it from the terminal by
executing /Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs &
everything I mentioned before works in this instance of emacs,
including preview (yay, what a cool feature).
I'm happy with this hack for the moment but I think it's something for
the devs to work on for obvious reasons.

where the original poster says he found the problem is known to be
intermittent (I asked him about it and he didn't have anything
further on the topic). I didn't find any other evidence of that
though...
for what it's worth, /usr/texbin is in the sh terminal path.

Thanks for your help. If it's a bug, let me know and I'll try to
report it. I hope Mail doesn't turn out to be HTML mail. Lastly,
please consider that I tend to stumble my way through Unix and have
never used a mailing list. Clear advice and instruction is
appreciated.
