What happens if you run the command quoted above on the command line?
Assuming there is a _region_.tex file.
I'd suspect that you get the following error as well:
> ! Missing $ inserted.
> <inserted text>
> $
> <*> ...tions,footnotes]{preview}[2004/11/05]\fi} _
> region_.tex
>
> ! LaTeX Error: Missing \begin{document}.
