As an aside, the kpsewhich TeX Live people are very
hard to convince there is an issue here.
In fact I had already tried back in october 2014
and it was a dead-end; fortunately the Mac OS expert
Adam Maxwell (author of TeX Live Utility for Mac OS)
was very responsive thus it contributed a factor 6
speed improvement to kpsewhich. (will be available
to future TL2015 release, already in pretest)
Combined with that part of the 11.88.5 release which
brings a 3 fold speed improvement, that makes for
a total whopping 18 times faster launch of AucTeX 11.88
on a Mac OS X which has not set up environment
variables for the TEXMFHOME, TEXMFLOCAL, TEXMFDIST
etc things
People aiming at ultimate speed should set up these
environment variables, but this brings other issues
(when one maintains for whatever reasons multiple
TeX installations on one's machine)
