What was the result of `M-x list-load-path-shadows RET'? Sorry, I'm out of ideas here. Last thing comes to mind is you start Emacs with `-q' switch, eval minium expressions to load AUCTeX in scratch buffer and try to find the culprit. You can file a bug report if you have something.
