Re: Microsoft's new "Seeing AI" for the Visually Impared

Sigh, no matter how good the news is, some people will go out of their way to throw stones at it without regard for the people it would help.

This does sound very cool. I looked at the E Sight eye wear, but at $15,000 they are way more than I can afford, so any alternative options are welcome. Hopefully Microsoft's solution won't be as expensive as E Sight's.

The one thing I can see that could be a problem is the use of a smart phone. It raises some questions.

1. Where are the pictures processed? Locally or in the cloud? If it's in the cloud, besides the possible privacy concerns for those that obsess on it, there is also the data bandwidth it would require. Not all cellular carriers, especially outside the US, offer a plan with unlimited data, and those that do charge a premium for it.

2. The smart phones battery life would be a concern too. The battery life in smart phones are already rather short. Using a smart phone to process real t ime image data would burn up the batteries pretty quick. I doubt you could get a day's use out of them without recharging.

E Sight uses a dedicated image processor with its own battery pack that you either wear over your shoulder or clipped to your belt. Although it raises the cost, the advantage is that E Sight can put as big a battery in it as needed to provide a full day's use. You also get faster image data processing because you aren't sharing CPU time with a phone's other functions.
