well if the PDF has markup, i.e. has actual text, you can use Adobe Reader and it has a save as other option in the file menu. If the PDF is a scanned image, or like computer generated image of some sort, then the process would have to be to OCR the image, and you would need software like AabYy FineReader or OmniPage or something of that nature which would do the OCR then save to the format of your choice. If OCR fails, then the image most likely has no text on it. For instance, if all you see is discombulated characters alongside symbols like dollar sign, etc. Then the image is just an image and not text.

Some PDFs have text where every 3rd or 4th word is run together with 2 or 3 more words without spaces. This is not fixed when you convert, I don't know how to fix these type of documents.
