For sticking stuff to your desktop, I usually do this:
1. Press the start menu key.
2. I typed "Notepad" into the search box. (Without the quotes.)
3. When notepad icon appears in the search results, I press applications key, and arrowing to "Open file location", and hit enter. After that, windows accessories folder will open up, you will find a shortcut of the notepad icon in that folder. Press applications key again, this time, arrow to send to sub menu, and expand the menu, select Desktop (create shortcuts), and hit enter. and, bingo! Next time when you press windows plus m, or whatever keys you press to go to your desktop, you should see a notepad icon on your desktop.
