Re: I'm kind of concerned about the culture surrounding usability

If someone says that disability is a social construct, odds are they're talking about mental disability, and pretending that physical disabilities don't exist. #naxalt
And so far as Autism is concerned, I can see the argument. Sure, one could say that sensory overload thresholds being so low as to cause issues living around most people is a disability, along with being bad at reading nonverbal cues or intent, or not being interested in social climbing games (*looks at the above links warily*), but it could also be argued that focusing on popularity contests instead of creating a robot that can email the cure for cancer is something of a disability, also.
Regarding the concept of the blind community... I dunno. The US is 3000mi across, contains 300,000,000 people, around 10,000,000 of whom are legally blind or severely visually impaired. Population densities vary wildly from millions of people in Chicago and New York, to towns with fewer than 1000 inhabitants s cattered around forests swamps and farmland. And then you have the eternal rivalry between the NFB and ACB, the specialist schools, the conventions, etc. The NFB, at least, seems to promote the idea that blind people need blind role-models, on top of their organizational structure, which feels like a cross between a representative republic and a church. Add the US's obsession with identity politics into the mix, and I guess you could get something curious.
(oh, something this reminded me of that harkens back to what Dagonite has been saying: Louis Braille got his ideas for his eponymous writing system from the French military. Because, as it turns out, in a 19th century empire, being able to communicate silently in the dark had military applications. Even pirates wore eyepatches so that they'd always have one eye adjusted to darkness, should they have to fight below deck. Meaning that pirates also had to learn to fight and navigate in a high-stakes situation without d epth perception. You are now imagining Pirate Braille.)
