I myself use actually Virtualbox quite successfully. Yes, Vmware is much more usable, but Virtualbox has some options I really like, especially the headless mode. As I ssh into my virtual machines quite often, in order to copy and paste more easily, the icon of vmware on my taskbar got quite annoying to me. In addition to the graphical interface, you can use Virtualbox from the command line as well. But yeah, the gui needs some time for getting to know it. If you're using NVDA, object navigation is quite useful.
But of course, if you plan to use win7 in a virtual machine, Vmware makes probably more sense.
