Just to be sure there isn't any misinformation going:
For finding the trapdoor, follow the advice from post #3. You'll have to explore a bit beyond the lake in order to get your new beacon to the trapdoor. If you're having trouble finding the way past the lake just walk along the north-most wall until you hear an opening.
Also, CrystalD, you shouldn't have to find the note first. That's just one of several ways of starting the quest. What happened to make you think you wrecked it? Maybe you hit a bug?
