Yep, I run malware bytes free every week as well, but you could run it as often as you feel is needed.
Combine that with Win Defender, and some common sense and you should be good. Just keep at least two backups of your important files in different locations (I put one on the cloud with sync.com and one on a 16GB flash drive and always copy changes to important stuff to both ASAP) and you should really be fine, as a worst case reinstall should kill almost all viruses anyway.
