There's a cheat that will let you fly in whatever direction you're facing. It's not suddenly though and it doesn't work in all levels. Hold escape and enter. You'll fly until you reach the end of the section you're in or until you jump. You can still be hit by UFOs sometimes and gun batteries as you pass but you won't be hit by anything at height 0.
