My guess is that you have some alias overriding it, or some conflict with an existing alias. What exactly are you typing to cast a spell?
Two things might help you to debug it: try casting a spell, and when it fails, use the 'history' command to see what was actually sent to the server. If the command in your history is different from the one you sent, then mush-z is doing something to it.
Another possibility would be to use a different abbrevation for the 'cast' command - for example, instead using the word 'cast', try using just the 'cas' or 'ca' abbreviations.
