It honestly is draining to be someone's support system. The more friends you have, you may need to take on this role more often. it's not an infinite resource. Being there for someone is something that takes effort to do, which is why some people can't or won't do it. That's why there are different callibers of friends. If you have someone in your life who wants to get shit from you, but every time you try to hang out or make plans to do something, they ghost you, that's a shitty friend.
Mason's actions don't make it easy for people to be his friend. That, combined with the emotional draining effect you get when you're constantly someone's rock, makes it harder still. So now we start looking at motives. Why are people going to hang out with someone like Mason. He's a toxic person, and he'll drain you dry. So, it begs the question.
To me, the answer is simple. What are they getting out of it. For them, they just have to pretend to care, and they might get any number of goodies. Admin status on his games, help with a map or something, or maybe even help with code. I don't know all the things he does, but let's say there are things that might be worth the hassle.
He can also be fun when he's in a good mood, so there's that. It's not constantly a drag being around him. You just have to navigate the eddies and currents of his bad temper, emotional instability, and poor impulse control. If you can do that, and stroke his ego at the same time, you have yourself a line to whatever he will provide.
