The Ethics of Digital-Product Licensing and Media/Software Acquisition

A
post
on the General Games Discussion side of the forum got me thinking about the ethics of software distribution and generally how individuals should properly acquire digital-based products.
Sparing any personal attacks (please refrain from pointing fingers and starting unnecessary arguments), what are your views on what makes for acceptable digital product acquisition? I realize some folks may claim it's much easier than others may make it out to be, but as is the case with any post on this forum surrounding this issue, it seems to be a little more complicated than simply, "If you didn't buy it, you shouldn't own a copy."
This is a wildly popular topic -- piracy has always been a hot-button issue in the digital landscape, and I'm curious how people (specifically on this forum) feel abstractly about this; hence my plead for folks to not bring in outside bickering regarding particular matters from the forum.
Note this can pertain to any form of digital product (media, software, etc).
