Re: Best space strategy games?
Aurora is to MOO as… Hm, well. Maybe I can best illustrate this with an example. MOO ships are built out of pre-designed modules, you put, say, Merculite Missiles and some shields on, but the point is that you're basically picking components off a menu. Aurora's approach is more like designing each individual component. YOu have to design and research engines, sensors, weapons, fire control, etc. etc. SHips are built up out of those components and a few off-the-shelf parts, the final stat block for a ship deisgn looks something liek this…
Galileo class Gravsurvey Ship 4000 tons 388 Crew 672.4 BP TCS 80 TH 240 EM 0
3000 km/s JR 3-50 Armour 1-22 Shields 0-0 Sensors 1/1/3/0 Damage Control Rating 3 PPV 0
Annual Failure Rate: 42% IFR: 0.6% Maintenance Capacity 315 MSP Max Repair 100 MSP
Lockheed JD4000 Jump Drive Max Ship Size 4000 tons Distance 50k km Squadron Size 3
E90 Nuclear Pulse Engine (6) Power 40 Efficiency 0.90 Signature 40 Armour 0 Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 300,000 Litres Range 150.0 billion km (578 days at full power)
Gravitational Survey Sensors (3) 3 Survey Points per hour.
The exact stats in that ship data block take a little getting used to, but basically this is a small, unarmed survey ship to find what Aurora calls jump points, which are the game's answer to faster-than light travel. It is capable of going at 3000 KM per second, which is thanks to the custom-designed nuclear pulse engines the player has researched. It has a jump drive itself, which ensures that it can use any jump points it does find. It will probably be deployed either alone or with sister ships of a similar class, possibly with an armed escort just in case.
The thing to understand about AUrora is that it simulates a ton of detail. That jump ship will have a captain with a name and service history. THe systems you explore will be realistically scaled, that is, you will find systems with multiple planets and multiple stars, sometimes at extreme distances. Planets have atmospheres, and you won't be able to colonize most of them right away,b ut you can set up terraforming projects which take quite a bit of time to complete.
If this hasn't scared you off, you can find your screen resolution by going into Display Settings in WIndows 10, which I presume is what you have. It will be a combo box literally called "Screen resolution."
