I know the newbie islands pretty much inside out.
BTW, you don't have to trigger the red fern at all. You don't have to say Distemper or anything else. That's just a handy clue.
Go to Polliwog swamp, look for a room that mentions the smells of strange flowers (it's 1 west of the rocky island with the newt). Search there over and over till you find a red fern. Then go to the farmer in Stillwater, talk to him, just to be sure, then go south, type "use fern dog", then talk to the farmer. Boom. Done.
