Another option for the panning if you want to still be able to pan other sounds while changing their volume, say like if you were doing a sidescroller with random panned ambience, is to use the play_custom_stationary method, I might be a bit off on the name, which lets you choose a starting pan for the sound. The pan would not be affected at all by volume step which allows you to actually simulate things moving farther or away from the player's field of hearing as he/she moves around.
