Re: your thoughts: endless v.s. goal orientated
I actually think the people mentioning endless with goals have a point here, since to me at least, even if the game itself is theoretically endless or the goals take a long time to achieve, I'll always spend longer just trying to achieve something than playing on simply seeing numbers get bigger, even more so if the goals are stories or quests, or even parts of a larger story.
Even with simple arcade games, I'm far more likely to go on playing if I get some sort of achievements for successive games, rather than each game simply being an exercise in wracking up the highest score possible, look at something like beatstar as an example.
