You can indeed just use -x.  But the actual problem isn't operator precedence, it's that if you multiply a negative number by 1 then you just get the negative number.  If you want to do it as a multiplication, you always multiply by -1. That's not a programming problem, that's just the standard rules of signed numbers.

But x = -x in programming languages is better.  The compiler will probably optimize x *= -1 so long as it's integers, but that's not true of floats or in debug builds, and -x is the idiomatic way.

I did explicitly say that the JVM is fine, and that I was only complaining about java.  Not sure if your comments are aimed at me but I went out of my way to make sure that I was clear on that point.
