Short answer: he's in power because a bunch of idiots believes his populist rhetoric, and then he stayed in power because nobody had the balls to kick his ass out.
You absolutely cannot try to argue that Trump can't be racist because he's the president still. That's a lot like saying that priests can't commit sex-crimes because they're trusted members of the clergy. Most of them are perfectly good people who would never dream of harming anyone, of course, but some of them have not only abused people, but gotten away with it and been protected by the church for it.
Trump's position in office has nothing to do with whether he is or is not a racist. And Trump's chances in the election clearly have nothing to do with whether or not he's a racist. Ironcross is not alone when he says that he'd rather have this man in charge than let a centrist democrat take the presidency. Actual thought doesn't even enter into this. Hatred for an ideology is so strong that tangible proof is ignored in favour of that hatred.
This is America. It's also other countries, too; America is not alone in their tolerance of fascism. Because that's what this is. Fascism. Pure and simple.
