Actually, the european, American and Chinese Iphones all use different bands. However, what I read is that the carrier exercises total control over the device, and that device is specificly built to work in that network, and support that carrier's bands. As I said this would be a problem, when going abroad, and I don't want to pay for the phone in installments, so I have saved up for the full phone. I think if you don't want to switch carriers, the full cost carrier and apple cost the same if you don't want to do a trade in. Also the software lock will block the dual sim ability, which I also intend to use.
