I don't think the electoral college has any effect on the senate or house. Popular vote decides that.
But all we're doing is waiting to see who will get to at least 270 electoral votes first, which is how much you need to secure the presidency.
So, when we vote for our candidates, we're actually pandpicking a group of leaders, called electors, who are already pledged to this or that candidate, and they will meet in their respective states on Monday, 14 December. They will officially cast their votes there, which will be counted a few weeks before the inauguration when the new congress is sworn in.
