Hmm, I think a lot of that may be the fault of VM lag, honestly. Have you tried, say, ubuntu mate and compared the results? I'm running coconut on my HP right now, 4 cores and 8 GB ram, and have actually had better performance than I did on ubuntu mate. And I should know, am using linux as my primary now.
Btw, have you tested orca with the touch screen? I've heard very conflicting things about it's touch screen support, or lack there of.
