The same occurs often with Facebook posts. As you said, absence of vocal inflections may be a source of missunderstandings, with the unfortunate fact they may influence negatively in your real life relationships.
By the way, perhaps games could be a nice way of enhancing social skills. It of course does not replace socializing with your real friends.
Concerning annoying people, one day my brother was playing Dota 2. A user on the chat said another in the team (in Spanish), I hope your mum dies!. It was writen instead of voiced through microphone, but the phrase and its context didn't make any dough about the lac of hummour on the statement.
