yes, because that effects all tracks equally. What you want to do is find the point where the item should be broken and press A to make a split. Then use control right to select that item and delete it.

Another way to do the same thing is to position the edit cursor so that it's just before the start of whatever it is that you want to keep, then press windows shift comma. What this does is shrinks the item's left edge so that it meets where the play cursor is. Windows shift period will do the same thing, but for the right edge. These two actions do not respect ripple, so you will have to manually move the item to the start of the project, or wherever else you would like it to be.
