the thing is that with facebook and hwatsapp you don't really have a choice because everyone uses it. Besides, try googling your own name and see what stuff pops up, I was expecting much but not that much info about me, so the internet knows more then you know. You can't avoid companies collecting / spreading data about you really, because then you might as well quit using a computer at all.
About elten I think they just decided let's make users pay and make almost every feature payed. No thanks. I'd rather use twitter or something lse and get everything for free
