I managed to beat the game without the mirror mode on, in fact, I don't even have it. But I do agree, god mode is a must, if you want to get trough asphodel in one piece. I'm tempted to try one run without it, to see what I can do. But I don't think you really need that mirror mod to win the game consistently.
