aha, I know of it. Never used it my self, but know someone who did.
A suggestion would be to upload the xml file to a github repository or pastebin, and then paste the link to the raw version of the file, the updater could than check it as if it was on any other server. Then, as github and pastebin are farely trusted domains, I think most people would be able to download it, as it would pass through most firewalls.
Next, you could make a github release for each version, adding the url of the attachment in the xml. Alternatively, you can use dropbox or whatever else you want for hosting, as long as clicking the provided url would lead to a save downloaded file as/opening/downloading size from websitename dialog in browsers. In this way, you make it less likely the users firewall will block your connection
