Well Keyisful, this is a perfect illustration of how to start differing from Entombed in small ways. Rather than having plans to code some great encyclopedia, simply add a description field each item that gets read along with it's stat info when you hit the x key. No biggy, just some text something like:
"This is a large, two foot long black rat with glowing red eyes that reaks of sewage and drips with unspeakable slime"
Ditto with some of the other mechanics I suggested, for example add one food item to find. Small steps is indeed the way, but better to start your small steps in the directions you wish to go eventually, than have to insert random tangents later into a huge and complex wall of coding, this indeed was the problem with the original Entombed and why the Entombed dungeon creator never got finished, and so it's why I suggest starting small now and building up rather than trying to insert later.
