Forcing the uninstall process should work. This is how I got rid of Avast.
As for other alternatives, it depends on whether or not you want to pay for an antivirus program.
On my machine, I have Vipre, which is extremely accessible but somewhat expensive.
As backup, I have Clamwin, which is also accessible but free.
If you have to have a free antivirus, I don't know of any others that are accessible at the moment, besides Security Essentials. And we all know that's not really a solution at all. Keep in mind that Clamwin really isn't designed to be a standalone solution, though, so maybe you could get one of the free solutions, like Avast, for your active protection, then run scans with Clamwin, just for peace of mind, and knowing that you have some control over virus removal.
