No larger than 8GB per stick, and no more than 16GB total loaded memory.
Getting that type of SDRAM will give you the best experience.
Remember that one memory slot is under the keyboard plate, which you'll have to unscrew if you use, filled by default, and one is near the HDD and fan enclosure, empty by default, and is easy to get to.
My suggestion is to buy another 4GB stick, and put it in the easy to get in slot, since you will barely ever, if ever, need more than 6 to 8GB maximum, even with heavy memory loads like advanced graphics, audio, and video editing programs, or multiple windows, and not more than 4GB with regular ones.
