Hmm don't know how to explain how you'd know whether he's lower or higher, but I suppose...er...when he's lower the sound is higher-pitched and slightly quicker, while when he's higher its... uhm... sounds like a copter without the hum of the engine? lol. But I say, experiment, then you'd know. When you shot him he would grunt, and if he didn't, you missed.
