your patch is good!  Thank you very much.  Can you tell me what the
perl-speak is for -35 <= $dB < 0 and I will run with that.

Dean, I don't think the Stereophile dither article you linked to is
quite analogous; it's refering to trunkating 24-bit sampled audio to
16-bits - so you still have a full 16-bits of actual 'real' data.  With
the SB2 volume control situation however, the division process ('cos
that's what it actually is), is loosing the resolution of a 16-bit
sample at the lsbs.  I think this is why it's audiable.  I don't think
it applies to the replay gain situation, but I would have to think
about it some more to be sure.  I'm not using replay gain at the moment
(but I would like to try it when I get time), so I can't do any
listening tests to verify my theory.
