Thanks chaps for the ideas. Let me respond in turn:

LavaJoe: I have tried a number of different AAC files from my library,
and have found that all seem to exhibit this problem. Obviously, those
with quieter audio tend to suffer worse. Being unsure of the copyright
implications of posting the entire Kate Bush AAC track to the web, I'll
hold off doing so. However, you might find that if you encode the
'track1' sample I posted earlier into AAC using iTunes then that should
give you a sample file to work with. Thanks for offering to verify my
findings anyway.

JJZolx: I tried your suggested modification to convert.conf and the
result was worse. Bascailly, the first second of the track plays, but
it rapidly explodes into a solid band of digital static noise. It
almost sounds like some kind of positive feedback loop rapidly
increasing the amplitude to a point of massive clipping distortion. I
hope that description makes some sense!

Andy: That's an interesting analysis, and you have described perfectly
the way in which the noise seems to follow the music (as you can hear
on the piano chords on the sample I provided).

Certainly it would be interesting if anyone out there is able to
reproduce these results. To me it is very easy to reproduce using a
standard Linux system; slimserver RPM; faad2; and some AACs ripped
using iTunes.

Thanks again,
Nick.
