What SS version are you using? Some versions of the SB volume control, used 16 bit sub-integer divisors and created rounding of 16 bit audio. This was audiable to me and some others (but apparently not everyone!). The latest nightlies don't do this, but only with gains of more than -30dB. Replay gain uses the same volume control routines.
