OK, so lets agree that the power coming out of the hole in your wall is
full of all sorts of nasty stuff, and you really don't want that making
its way through to the delicate audio parts of your system.

You can (1) try to take it out between the wall and the device (thats
the idea of the fancy cord) or (2) take it out in the PSU of the device
itself.

I'm intrigued to know if there is a real difference between these
strategies. Of course, an ideally designed PSU should take ALL the
rubbish out, so a fancy power cord is redundant. On the other hand, I
can appreciate an argument that says that any practical PSU
implementation can only attenuate the rubbish, not eliminate it
entirely, so anything that gives it less rubbish to start with is
potentially beneficial.

Another way of looking at it: is adding a certain amount of capacitance
(or whatever is meant to be actually doing the trick) INSIDE the case
exactly equivalent to adding the same amount of capacitance OUTSIDE the
case?

If yes, then the PSU designers should be doing it and the fancy power
cords are redundant.

If no, (perhaps because the rubbish, once allowed inside your case, can
affect other components by RFI), then there's a case for putting cleaner
power in.

Still curious (but also sceptical about fancy power cords!)
