I am running my SB3 into an Audio Synthesis DAX Discrete which is connected in balanced mode to a Steve Huntley modified Audio Research LS22. I use the LS22 volume control. Many DAC's control the volume in the digital domain and audio quality suffers as a result. I noticed this on my previous DAX Decade where the audio quality was noticeably worse using its volume control. The new Discrete controls the volume in a different way to overcome this but I still leave its control at max and use the pre-amp.
