The answer depends on your components. If your components sound better at full volume, then that's what you should set them at. If the component is linear (which is probably not likely), then it doesn't matter what volume setting you choose. For example, you may have a preamp that sounds better at lower gain settings. In this case, you would be better off using the preamp at the lower gain, in other words, setting the SB3/DAC at full volume, and changing preamp/amp volume. If, on the other hand, your preamp sounds better at full gain, then you'd be better off using the SB3/DAC volume control. It's not really about whether the volume control is digital or analog. For each component, you want to try to have the gain set at a point in its range where it sounds the best. In any case, this will probably necessitate, dare I say it, trial and error.
